Go watch the movie! haha... Its damn slapstick in the first part, but once you get to the end, come back to my blog and read my previous post on my 2009 resolutions haha... You'll get what I mean.

Just finished working on a project on Saturday night/Sunday morning. I think the team worked for 12 hours straight (except maybe a short break for dinner). It didn't help that I was suffering from a cold/flu hahaha...

Ended up throwing #$$@%*&$#%^%@!@ language around ahaha... Can't help it haha...

But this week should be better hahaha....

The last day of the year is upon us~ It's been quite a year ain't it? I spent a good first half of 2008 in Taiwan, which was a really interesting and enriching experience.

It's almost 6 months since I arrived back in Singapore and I've completed yet another semester in NUS. Hopefully the coming year will be a good one for me and all my friends and family.

Resolutions? Nah... I don't really have a habit of making resolutions hahaha... but for 2009 I would wanna be less judgemental and build more self confidence LOL

Oh yeah! And I want to go on a nice, relaxing graduation trip haha... whether it be in the Asian region [Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand (not really Bangkok) or in Europe (Austria, Germany, Switzerland etc etc you get the point hahaha)

Onwards to a better year! "Yes, we can."

Last but not least, I wish for world peace.

To all potential Miss Universe particpants out there, flash that victory sign on cue and give that megawatt smile! wahaha...

Back from Malaysia

Happy holidays to all~

The visit to Malaysia was quite a refreshing and interesting one. Went to Melaka, KL and Genting Highlands all in the matter of 3 days (1 X room change everyday ahaha...)

The interesting thing was that Meleka was the location that caught my eye the most out of all 3 places. Maybe it's because I haven't been there in...say... a decade or more? Yeah when I was a kid I used to think the place was freaking boring and all Melaka had to show for its splendour was the Big Ol' crimson-coloured church haha...

A 2nd visit almost 10 years later and it's a whole new experience. Listening to a live band while drinking a bottle of Heneiken (woo~) in the cool weather, walking around the narrow streets at night; it's all very relaxing and tranquil.

Not to mention that the rich history of Melaka and the unique architecture which can be found there makes it a photographers' haven. Will post pictures up soon once I process them haha...

I did suffer a bit of a burnout when I took the photography module in school because (like I mentioned to my friends) I thought of photography as a hobby and I wasn't really adapting well to the idea of producing surrealistic and conceptual pictures haha... but the module has sorta pushed my imagination to its limits so perhaps I might experiment with such themes in the future, but for now though I guess my main interest is still tilted towards the photojournalistic perspective hahaa....

A good meal or a good brain?

I just read an interesting article by Wong Kim Hoh in today's "Lifestyle" section of the Sunday Times. Before people start proclaiming that ST is propaganda material lol... let me just say that the article was a column written by Wong, reflecting on the nuances of social life.

The article talks about how "a growing number of politically correct people who will chew you up and spit you out if you dare say the wrong thing," which reminded me of an incident which occured at the 2902 gallery, where I just blurted "That's stereotyping" to my photography module teacher when she said that computing students were generally better at numbers haha...

Could I be one of those PCP (politically correct politburo/people)?

After reading the article, I realised why some people like to call arts/social sciences graduates "fluff" machines hahaha... I think it's the way some academic papers are written. These papers often use "cheem" jargon and tiptoe around words and ideas rather than just go straight to the point.

The article cites examples such as:
The Blind = Visually Impaired
Mad People = Mentally Challenged
Blackboard = Chalkboard

I personally find it quite tiring to constantly think of politically-correct terms all the time when having a conversation with someone. It's really quite difficult to be on your toes all the time during a conversation without you being mentally drained at the end of it, especially when you just want to have a good meal.

I quote the article:
"Hawk-eyed and sharp-eared, these zealots wait to pounce and censure anyone who exhibits behaviour or uses words that may upset women, ethnic minorities, homosexuals, the disabled, the overweight, the ugly and even the environment."

Being careful in your choice of words and not getting carried away with stereotyping is good, but having to think of every single word to say to someone (just in case it is at odds with their ideals) is just really really tiring.

Sadly, when one encounters a slip of the tongue and says something politically incorrect (without any malice and not harbouring any prejudice); sometimes he is potentially subject to criticism at an instance.

Perhaps thats why people find it very tiring to talk to arts/social sciences students? (Look at me! I'm stereotyping! wahahaha...)

God did give us a brain to think, and I totally agree that we should use it more often rather than just following instructions blindly, but sometimes, you just really want to sit down and have a good meal. God also gave us one mouth, so just enjoy the food first and chill hahaha...

An Open Letter

This came to mind at a odd time of 4.30am haha... don't know why but I'll just write it down before I forget it.

Dear friends,

It is unfortunate that the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai have resulted in the deaths of over 140 people. The number of dead and injured could still be rising even as we speak.

It is especially unfortunate to hear of the passing of Ms. Lo Hwei Yen, a 28-year-old Singaporean lawyer. The Late Ms. Lo became the first Singaporean to come directly into harm's way via an act of terrorism.

With more Singaporeans heading overseas on working assignments, it is only a matter of when, not if they will be directly affected by acts of terrorism. Let us learn from this incident to be vigilant, but will we be able to draw the line clearly between paranoia and vigilance?

Rest in peace. Ms. Lo.

Was reading a couple of blogs belonging to NUS students who had gone on SEP during the same semester as me. I'll list one here: http://vsrabbit.blogspot.com/ (went to China for SEP)

Haha... I sort of realised that almost all the students usually comment that SEP changed their outlook on life someway or another haha... I gotta say the same for myself.

During SEP, you experience things that you sometimes will never experience before. You're thrown into a somewhat foreign environment (esp. for those going to America or Europe or Scandinavia regions) and you're required to adapt to the local environment as quick as possible.

This is the time where one shouldn't always see the flaws in the foreign culture and say that "Oh... this country is so inefficient/messy/disorganised compared to Singapore". All I can say is that this is the time to acknowledge the difference in culture and recognise or even pick up pointers on how improve your own well-being.

Best part is you'll learn how to appreciate what you have in Singapore. The nice facilities, the quick and efficient automated systems, the organised planning of anything and everything. Sure, the frustrations showed when I was there in the beginning, but then you begin to take a step back and learn how to slow down your pace of living.

Take a slow walk and enjoy the foreign atmosphere (and skip lessons/be late for class wahaha)

Japan trip during SEP (Day 3)

Alright haha... after another 2 weeks... here's Day 3 of my trip to Japan~ This time, it's the trip to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. Entrance fee was quite expensive @ 5800 yen... but it was worth the price haha... had a lot of fun!

Big expectations for the local version of Universal Studios which should up in 2010 haha...

Japan Trip (Day 1 and 2)

Finally! Pictures from my first two days in Osaka, Japan!

Though it's only a mere 2.5 hours away from Taiwan, I can say that the Japanese culture somewhat differs quite a bit from the Taiwanese culture haha...

Japan trip

Been a long time since the last update. And I'm back from my Japan trip!

Yeah it was fun haha... considering the last time I was there was about 10 years ago with a tour group. This time it's just me and desmond, armed with maps and constipated japanese wahaha...

But knowing how to read hiragana and katakana was useful haha... so my C6 and D7 efforts during Secondary 1 and 2 were not put to waste LOL

The photos I took in 7 days amount to about 2.5 GB. That adds up to about 1000+ photos haha...

Sidenote:

The Japanese 500 Yen coin and the Taiwanese 50 NTD coin have the same colour and almost the same size.

I was back at the Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan when I wanted to purchase a bus ticket to take me back to my dorm.

The guy said the price of the ticket was 145 NTD and I happily passed him ONE 50NTD coin, expecting him to return me 355 NTD in return wahaha....

Jialat. I got all 3 cultures mixed up in my mind right now ahaha.

Yes. It's been two weeks since I last updated my blog...... due to the number of papers I have to write and the projects I have to do...

So I'm facing this dilemma now. Verbal constipation. You heard me right hahaha... I bet you've heard of the term "verbal diarrhoea". Now let me introduce you to the term "verbal constipation".

I've been writing too many papers, to a point where I run out of words to type into my word document haha... No more ideas and no more words...zZzZz

The good news is exams are ending on the 20th haha... I can see the light @ the end of the tunnel.

Need to go run again and be healthy wahaha...

It's been proven. I can't bear to imagine/see myself dancing/moving around to party music haha... Somehow it's more of a "listening" thing to me...

Like how some clubbers can't accept trance/electronic dance music, I find myself actually quite receptive towards it haha...maybe because I listen to the music more than I try to find a way to dance to it.

Yes folks... you got that right and you heard me right...... somehow I think I got an acid-laced tongue zZzZz... that goes out of control once in a while...

I think I need to slow down and take a deep breath before I say or do anything haha... I find myself saying or thinking of sacarstic things to say or reply to others wahaha... Sometimes I don't even need to think and the words just come out from my mouth like a reflex action haha...

I've tried controlling it haha...but once in a while... you just let your mouth slip once in a while you know...

Yeah if 包小松 or 包小柏 ever need help, I think they can come look for me zZzZz...

I need to pray for guidance haha...... if not this mouth of mine might get me into trouble in the future wahaha...

I was watching some Japanese variety show and I realised, indeed... kids sometimes say the darndest/hurtful stuff to one another... but at least they blurt it out and somehow seem to forget all about it later... (at least most of the time lah... I don't know about kids nowadays... Some of them seem to have skip the "young and innocent" phase)

Adults? They just think about saying such stuff in their minds and try their best to "gek" and control in order to not say it out...... It's always at the back of their heads... then they PR and act all smiley... Sibei sian... To think that I actually might want to work in a PR firm when I graduate...

Does everyone in the PR industry also behave like that? I hope not zZzZz...

Again... another weekend of chiong-ing papers and projects... Life will be pretty dull... until the end of the exams and when the Japan trip comes...

So, presenting more random words to bore us all... wahaha

How to know when you've stayed in Taipei for a loooong time:

1) When you start recognising the part-time staff who work at the nearby 7-11 convenience stall
(includes both day and night shifts)

2) When the cleaning auntie starts striking up a conversation with you... while the both of you
are doing laundry.

3) When you run out of pamphlets to collect (of the places to visit), and you start collecting beer
bottles (to see what kind of beer you can find here)

4) When you realised that you've visited all the night markets in Taipei
(I can hear the whistles and 噓聲/boos hahaha... but seriously... I've checked already... really
all the listed night markets I walk finish liao)

5) When you start lamenting that there's nothing much left to do in Taipei, and the other parts of
Taiwan seem more interesting...

Good or bad?

好人難當，壞人好像比較容易當。That was my MSN nick a few weeks ago haha... Here's how I came up with that nick.

If a person is deemed good, nice and (insert postive adjective here) by others, he or she would must be portraying a positive image.

How can one improve on this positive image? Well... I don't think you can hahaha...how to be "good-er/better"? Just be yourself and be nice. The status-quo is just fine... no issues with that.

How about a "bad" person then? Bad behaviour, bad manners and (insert negative adjective here). Negative image, BUT if you think carefully, the bad guy has a chance of turning into a "good" guy, right? That's what they always portray in the movies... at least in those mainstream movies

Good guy stays a good guy, but bad guy has a chance of becoming a good guy. In this case I think the latter would definitely be more interesting. If you look at the mass media and start to think, can you tell me how many times have we seen the story of "Bad guy turns over a new leaf" or a story that is somewhere along that line?

Not to mention that sometimes one can be called "blur", "傻" or "overly nice" hahaha...... Seriously, I think people sometimes take nice people for granted... to the point where they start to make use of them or treat them like dumb people.

And so the saying goes: 男人不坏，女人不愛。So does this saying really hold truth?

好人難當，壞人好像比較容易當。你想做坏人，還是做好人？

Went to the Taipei Zoo on Sunday. Damn crowded sia... but at least got the party-like atmosphere haha... Haven't been to the zoo for a long time... maybe it's because of the Singapore Zoo's ticket pricing and location LOL.

You can take a direct MRT/LRT ride to the Taipei Zoo haha... and the entrance fee for students is only 30 NTD (less than SGD 2 bucks). Most probably adults have to pay close to 100 NTD? which is still almost 4 times lesser than what we pay in Singapore.

Filiming equipment. A grand total of 5-6 cameras were filming at the same time...but somehow they've managed to work out a standard set of "framing sequences" to use for the show, so editing is almost instantaenous in the sense that the producer will decide which camera's footage will be used.

Spring time has arrived! Woohoo~ Went for a 3 day 2 night trip to Kaohsiung and KenTing last weekend, but I only managed to find time to upload the pictures today haha...... I've been busy with projects and presentations~

Today could be considered one of the most exciting days that I had in Taiwan so far. No... no 3-day-2-night trips involved. Nah... no climbing, flying or swinging either.

A fellow NUS friend (Ruishen) and I went to the KMT office near our hostel first. We tried taking all the interesting items we could find. CDs, flags, flyers and the works haha...

The next stop was the DPP office, which was slightly further away (2 mrt stops). Good thing we hid our "blue camp" items in our bag haha... because you could sense that the aunties and uncles at the DPP office were really really passionate about the upcoming presidential elections.

One lady even wanted to take Ruishen's bag to stuff more packets of tissue inside. Heng ah... imagine the reaction if she saw the blue colour stuff we had inside wahaha......

At that moment, you suddenly realise how it's like being a secret agent with classified documents that cannot be seen by enemy eyes haha...... I told Ruishen it's as if we were carrying explosives in our bags......

And so that concludes one of the most adrenaline-pumping days I had in Taiwan LOL.

Nothing much to do on a Saturday night. Sunday's the day trip to Nantou (南頭) and I have to get up at 6.00 a.m. to meet the other people going...zzz...... but be prepared for more pic-intensive updates!

Ok. Moving on the more angsty stuff. I have to get this off my chest (after thinking about it for quite some time last night). For the record, what is written below represents views from my perspective. If you have any comments or whatsoever, just put them in my tagboard. Don't go around assuming that all guys think like that. Thank you.

Note: Oei Weiye, Mabel and Zheng Guo! haha... I think you people are the only few that may understand what's written below.

Here goes my rant:

I think the Singaporean society is too socialised today to accept the notion of gender equality. All the talk by feminists, I feel, is just like a gust of hot air. Just read the local newspapers, and you'll get what I mean. The true feminists must be tearing their hair out.

Let me introduce the theory of a "fake feminist" (thanks ah weiye. good theory lol.)
Fake feminists are women who argue for the equal rights of women in a society that is supposedly dominated by men (in their view). However, their notion of "equality" is seriously flawed. They argue for equal pay, equal treatment from employers and the works etc. BUT they expect men to treat them in a different manner. In a manner that is different from how men would usually treat their fellow colleagues.

Now. This is really quite amusing. From my P.O.V, if you're a women/girl/lady, and I treat you differently from how I treat other people, it's because you're my friend/colleague/relative/family/you-get-the-idea. Gender/sex is not the issue here. That doesn't mean I treat female strangers like crap. Like I said, the society is too socialised for me to do anything about it, so I just stick around and follow what everyone else does.

I think I'm starting to type gibberish now haha... I'll edit and do a re-post when I align my thoughts properly. Continuing on, before I lose my current train of thoughts.

Seriously, I feel it's seriously not easy being a member of the male species in society today. Ok, I hear you ladies, it's not easy being a women either, but let me finish my rant first ok? The other parts can come in later =)

I bet most, if not all women think that all men have watched porn at least once in their lives, and that the male species is driven more by natural instincts than by emotions. Well, I can't confirm with you on this one, maybe it's really 90% true or what, but I hope that women don't judge men based on criterias such as this, because I truly believe that there are people out there who do not belong to the above category.

I believe that anyone in this world has the right to express their emotions, be it a man or a woman. Then again, like I said, society is too socialised to realise this. If you're a man and you show too much emotions, people would say: "Get a grip on yourself!". People feel this is a show of weakness, but I beg to differ. Maybe that's why the average lifespan of a man is usually shorter than that of a woman, because we simply keep our problems to ourselves. Even yours-truly here has to rely on trusty blogspot.com to rant and release some hot air hahaha.....

Maybe that's why they always say "A woman's best weapon is her tears".

The aim of the above post was not to women-bash or whatsoever. It's just my rant and my message to women out there. Please don't set double standards when you are defining the term "Girl power" or "Equal rights for women" in your head. Of course we aren't expecting you to be bra-burning, slogan chanting activists, but please spare a thought for the men who are trying their hardest to be nice to you all.

Please lah, if he requests to go dutch during dinner, forgets to hold the door or pull the chair, that doesn't make him any less a man. That's just the voice of a socialised world ringing in your head.

Some quick updates before I leave for Hua Lian later today!

As I mentioned, school has already started for about 2 weeks, so there are less opportunities to go out and explore now. The cold weather isn't really helping either. Anyway, we went to kaypoh at this mini-concert held by Avex Taiwan for their upcoming local artistes.

There were a total of 2 artistes and 1 group singing at the concert, but it was raining quite heavily, so all the umbrellas were out in full force. Here are some picture I managed to take:

First Day of School......

Today was the first day of school! No pictures to show, but I'll try to describe in detail how classes are conducted here.

It's actually pretty much like SMU-style, just that some classes (like my first class - "Public administration ) contain up to 80+ students in a single room haha......so I can just lie in a corner of the classroom/just beside a wall. This kind of classroom...you can remain low profile and just be a bit more slack haha......

But unfortunately I can't find my textbook for this module, cos this is the "Part 2" of Public Administration, and all the other students got their textbooks during the 1st semester. Nvm...... I'll either be a pirate and zap or just be thick-skinned and try to borrow from the prof or classmates......

The other class I went for was a Post-graduate (Master's) class on television production. The module is pretty interesting in the sense we get to role-play as reporters and do mock TV-reporting footages as our assignments. However, the workload is terribly heavy... and considering that I have another Master's module to take... I think I may just drop this mod even though it's really interesting... I heard that the other module has a 6-week internship with a local Taiwanese english newspaper agency...We shall see haha......

We approached them to ask if we could take their pictures, but they told us that they were heading for a much bigger Cosplay gathering that was taking place at NTU's equivalent of the Sports and Recreation Complex.

Ok... I've finally gotten my Internet connection in my NTU dorm! It's been quite a hectic past few days... Unpacking, getting the administrative work done, shopping for household items and opening a local bank account.

The temperature is hovering around 10 degrees celsius now haha......so almost every other day you can expect wind and rain...can't see much of the sun. The IYC (International Youth Centre) is where I stay haha... Anyone wants to mail stuff to me can ask me for my address hahaha......

The Taiwanese student volunteers helping us out are really helpful. 比綠巨人還“好客”. I'll see if I can upload any of their pictures later. The dorm room is quite small, but cosy enough for 2 persons.

We tried walking around the campus these past few days, and I think the campus covers the same area as NUS, just that it has A LOT more vegetation.

This is the Royal Palm Boulevard (don't know if I spelt this correctly). It's 2 rows of Palm trees running down the entire stretch of road till the main entrance of NTU. Nice. hahaha

Overall the school gives me a really old-school feeling, very rustic and 古色古香. I'm still not used to the toilet culture here though. They don't allow people to flush toilet paper down the pipes, because the width of the pipe is damn narrow and the paper will clog up the toilets. So whatever is used for cleaning is thrown into a bin placed just beside you haha......

Taiwan is a nice place. Minus the bad weather. And the school toilets.

Back from a somewhat long hiatus. Life was pretty routine while I was at work. There wasn't really time to think about interesting issues or events to talk about. Almost everyday it was all about waking up, travelling to the work place, working, eating and sleeping hahaha......

Presenting today's topic: The Red Pill or The Blue Pill

I used to think that "The Matrix" (the very first in the trilogy) was a cool movie because of the CG effects and the "cool" portrayal of the protagonists. It was only a few days ago when I realised that its quite a "sociology" movie too haha...

Morpheus tells Neo that if the blue pill is consumed: "You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe." "You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Neo, of course, takes the red pill, and goes on a journey to discover the real deal behind the "Matrix". Then there's the bald guy who betrays Morpheus and wishes he could take the blue pill instead.

I liken the red pill to certain modules from FASS, especially Sociology haha.... because they make you realise that the world is not what it seems, and it makes you ponder about certain social issues (eg: income gap, social strata mobility etc.) I'm not a soci major, but I highly encourage everyone to take SC1101E if you have the chance. You'll want to throw your rose-tinted glasses away after attending the lectures hahaha.... but no obligations, you can take the blue pill if you want lol......

However, there are just some notions that too socialised and instilled upon you, which makes it hard for you to change your viewpoints with regards to certain issues. One can only say that he/she recognises and understands from both sides of the camp, but he/she would prefer the blue pill in some instances haha......

One such issue for me is with regards to members of the opposite sex (i.e: female in this case). I understand that the common notion that women should be "demure, gentle, soft-spoken blah blah blah" is just a socialised view which is propagated by mass media or pass down through tradition.

I seriously think this notion is very much deeply entrenched in the back of my mine wahaha... not so much the characteristic, but more of the appearance part. Not that I expect all women to wear skirts and have long, shiny hair, but I just feel that women should possess certain characteristics which sets them apart from the men. One doesn't need to be all girly and feminine, but looking like singer K.D Lang (http://www.cbc.ca/cp/entertainment/080131/e013172A.html) sure confuses the mind haha...

But of course some women must also be thinking about the same thing about men. Muscular/bulky? Tanned and tall?

Are women somewhat more open to the notion of what constitutes a "man"? Especially when uou look at the situation in Japan, with all its visual-kei rockers and bishonens. They certainly don't fit the notion of "man" as portrayed in mainstream mass media outside of Japan.

Well......at the end of the day, I think I can label myself as someone who has "taken the red pill" but who still lives for long periods in the "Matrix" wahaha...

Alright! Received the DL letter today. It's a nice feeling when you sorta know that you are studying and understanding what the lecturers are teaching, not just memorising/mugging.

Then I started to reminisce about the "good old days" when the "Spice Girls" and "Backstreet Boys" ruled the airwaves ahahaha...... on "Perfect 10 987 FM" no less.

I always thought that in Singapore, different radio stations target different niche audiences. Here's what I mean:

1) Gold 90.5 FM ---> Plays mostly oldies and targets the elder generation

2) Class 95 FM ---> Plays a mix of new and old radio hits, targets young adults and the working
crowd

3) Power 98 FM and Perfect 10 987FM ---> Plays the latest songs and targets mainly the
younger crowd

4) Lush 995 ---> For the sentosa crowd, the chill-out people and the....posers (jokes)

So, when I heard this song on Class 95FM... I realised that I could be getting......old.

Look at it this way. The songs that are playing on Gold 90.5FM (elvis prestley, beatles, englebert humperdinck etc.) now were the hottest hits during the 1950s and 1906s. Makes sense right?

So imagine when you start hearing Backstreet Boys' "I want it that way" on Gold 90.5FM...... haha I leave the imagination to you people...

Then perhaps 987FM would be the radio station that spends the most on purchasing the latest songs, whereas Gold 90.5 FM would just "kio" all the songs that the other stations are gonna stop playing on the airwaves. Makes sense too......right?

We shall see.

~我是潮洲人~ and The Politically-Correct Post

Am thinking of whether to apply for the Ngee Ann Kongsi scholarship hahaha...... but they have this really really particular clause for students who wish to sign up......

"We only accept Teochew applicants, i.e. only applicant whose father is Teochew. We require applicant to attach a copy of his/her birth certificate for dialect group verification."

Wahaha... sounds good to me lol.

Actually this post is not about the scholarship, it's going to be on the identity of the Chinese community in Singapore. (Disclaimer: NOT a racist post or what... and forget about the RK House thing... it's NOT funny)

I believe that a very large majority of the Malays and Indians in Singapore still do speak their mother tongue; be it with their parents or their classmates/colleagues. I'm thinking that most of them should be quite proficient at the language, at least in the Singaporean context.

Now you look at the Chinese community. Hmm... Chinese "B"? Kids who are struggling to read and write Chinese. To me, the talk about how students reading Higher Chinese seem to develop a sense of elitism is not really 100% valid. Ok, I admit that even I myself took it out of personal pride, but I certainly didn't feel that I was superior to the other students who weren't taking Higher Chinese. Higher Chinese classes also provide an avenue for students who are interested and wish to know more about the language.

It seems that the Chinese language has taken a step back in the minds of present-day students. Many study for the sake of getting the language "over and done with". Even with the Chinese "B" syllabus, it seems that students are still struggling to grapple with the seemingly complex strokes and pronunciation of Chinese characters.

All the talk on the advantages of being bilingual doesn't seem to influence students to become more interested in Chinese. It's quite sad actually. especially when some even think that speaking Chinese is being "chink" or uncool.

Now now... I'm not being an extremist and demanding that all Chinese be proficient in the Chinese language (I think also a bit hard lah lol), but at least knowing how to speak it fluently would be good enough. Save the 俗语 or 成语. At least don't sputter like a broken engine when trying to form coherent sentences in Chinese wahaha~~~

Why do I say this? I just received an e-mail from my student volunteer in Taiwan, and the first question she ask was: "Can you speak Mandarin/Chinese? I heard that some students in Singapore do not speak Mandarin/Chinese".

Sian lor~ It's the "Jia Kan Tang" syndrome, the "Banana" effect... Yellow on the outside, White on the inside.

So to all the Chinese out there! At least try to learn a bit more about the language lah haha... then you can also lament about the decline of the use of Chinese language in ENGLISH... like me LOL.

2007 Reflections?

Nah... not going to do reflections... I think people should've read enough of those in other blogs...... So~ Today's topic is about 尴尬 vs 给面子.

Weird topic? I beg to differ lah... when was the last time you were invited (or received an sms from a friend) to attend an event...and there was an "air of awkwardness" when you arrived? Could be that you didn't know 99.9% of the people there (except the one that invited you)? Perhaps the event wasn't your cup of tea?

Received an sms from my friend, but it turned out to be his gf who was doing the messaging. It was an invitation to attend her 21st birthday. My first reaction was: "Eh? I'm actually invited?"

(Sidenote: My friend's gf is very quiet when she goes out with us, the "Marist" people. So we don't actually know her that well...... Maybe it's because we're too chinked out? hahaha......)

So, I did what most people would do in this situation. Wonder if the others received the invitation as well, and most importantly, if they would be attending the event. I asked around and managed to get a few "see first" or "haven reply yet" haha...... and then I decided to wait for a day before replying.

Later that night, before our regular DoTA session, I was chatting to "that friend" (let's call him C for convienience sake) over MSN. He was lamenting how no one had yet to reply to the original message that was sent. C said he was frustrated over how long people were taking to reply, to which I replied that it could be that they were still trying to see if the birthday party would fit into their daily schedule.

I guess it wouldn't be too nice to confirm immediately, and then not go at the last minute right?

C said that he would be more than happy to receive a "ok, but I'll re-confirm with you later" as a reply. A long debate over what constitutes "pang sey" (放飞机) continued...... but in the end we both realised why the replies were taking so long to come in......

"Eh? I'm actually invited?"

Although we weren't close with C's gf, but after receiving the sms, I guess we all had an "obligation" to attend the event, in order to 给面子 to C. However, we were also wondering WHO ELSE was attending the party as well... quite sian right if you realised that you were the only one going?

That could happen to me wahaha... Off to check who else is going...
